Is It Time for New Shoes?
It is that time again. Kids seem to frequently outgrow their shoes. For a child without a disability, kids of any age usually have a wide selection to choose from at any store of their choice. A variety brands such as Under Armour, Nike or Salcony is frequently chosen by my two boys. While shopping for new shoes, my boys usually pick out their favorite colored shoes and brands and try on several shoes until they find that perfect pair of shoes to purchase.
A different shoe shopping experience
However for my daughter, Savannah, who has Cerebral Palsy, her shoe shopping experience is quite different than for my boys. Savannah unfortunately does not have many options to choose from. Finding the perfect shoes to fit Savannah’s AFO’s (Ankle Foot Orthosis/ braces has been a significant struggle over the years. When Savannah first began wearing braces, we would bring her braces into different stores with us and try her braces into several brands of shoes. We would ask for assistance from the associates at the shoe stores. We stuck with a couple of brands that made a wider shoe such as Converse and Saucony. However, Savannah would always manage to kick her shoes off which made it difficult to keep her walking in equipment such as her Upsee or walker. Plus, putting on her shoes was not only time consuming, but challenging.
How I discovered the perfect shoes for my daughter
A couple of years ago, Savannah was attending a program called Center for Independence through Conductive Education. Check out http://www.cfimove.org for more information. One of her peers was wearing a shoe I have never seen before. Sometimes you discover something new and amazing from people you know or come in contact with.
The Benefits of Billy Shoes
These shoes have laces like a normal shoe, however they have a zipper around the entire top of the shoes, making it easy to put on and take off. Additionally, Billy Footwear come in a high top, so Savannah’s new shoes will remain on her feet with or without braces. Savannah and I absolutely love Billy shoes! Visit http://www.billyfootwear.com for more information. Billy footwear have a variety of designs and colors to pick from and they have athletic shoes along with dress shoes and boots. Finding the right dress shoes has also been a challenge for us to find for Savannah. A huge benefit of the Billy shoes is that it literally takes 1 minute to put on! You put your child’s braced foot in the Billy shoe and zip it closed, then you are done. We also bought a pair of Billy shoes for Savannah for every day use when she doesn’t need her braces on. Hopefully, we can continue to use Billy Footwear to meet Savannah’s shoe needs. To make your life a little easier, I hope you discover Billy Footwear for your child too!
